Wedding in paradise

Last weekend I had the great pleasure of travelling to Waitete Beach north of Coromandel Town for the wedding of Matt and Celeste Armstrong. This place really is a paradise, and with the beach as a background and Celeste's family bach as the stage for the ceremony it was the perfect location for their special day.

Here are some photos of the beautiful couple. We had a wonderful day and I want to thank them for looking after me so well over the whole weekend.

Sir Richard Branson's flying visit for Outward Bound

This evening Sir Richard Branson visited Auckland to talk at a special VIP dinner with over 1000 guests at the new Auckland Viaduct Event Centre. GAP was lucky enough to cover the event in conjunction with DUCO events. Here are a few shots of Sir Richard. At the end I was able to quickly grab him for a cheeky selfy (self-taken portrait)and for him to sign a copy of his book I have. He proceeded to pose with my BRAND NEW business card for about 10 second (in front of a large gathering of followers) and then took the camera off me and started taking countless photos of ME. He put my camera through his legs, bent down and shot through them like as if in an Austin Powers movie. It was one of my most hilarious things to have happened to me in a long time. Richard......you are a legend, for being an amazing business person, but mostly for being a completely awesome human being.......a down to earth normal one.

Last weekend I had a blast covering Carmel and Thomas's wedding day and even though it started out horribly wet the sun came out just in time for the photo shoot and the rain held out just in time for us to finish. It was a wonderful day and I wish them all the best in the future.

I would like to congratulate Sacha Barrack (Malkin) for being crowned 'Bride of the Year 2010' - by Bride & Groom Magazine. I photographed Sacha and Nathan's wedding last December and I concur that she is a completely fitting winner and totally deserving of this title. Sacha, you are a great friend, mother and now wife and may you continue to grow and be generally AWESOME.

Well HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone. It's been a busy and fun 2010 and now its time to look forward to all that 2011 has to offer, including my own wedding to plan. Bring it on I say!!!!

On Monday the 3rd of Jan Caleb and Christina had their big day and I had a fantastic time with them up north of Auckland. My highlights would have to be the hay barn and the horses. The man in the overalls is the father of the bride and the owner/operator of the Warkworth Horse Riding centre. They are happy to let others use their farm for photos if anyone was interested. Just let me know and I can sort it out.

Over the weekend that has just passed I shot my 1st wedding of the 2010/2011 season. I was privilaged to be able to capture the marriage of two wonderful young people. Kerry and Quintin were married in Totara Park in Auckland, so no one could deny me the chance to get their feet just a bit dirty and get them in amongst the totaras.

Hello everyone. It has been a heck of a long time since I got down to business with the blog thing. Sorry. One day I will get back on top of things and post some stuff I have been meaning to share for ages. Keep an eye out for it.

Last weekend I once again caught up with one of my best mates and his WONDERFUL wife and their brand new baby boy Joshua Tamakura Walker, who is now 6 weeks old and looking so damn cute. Here are some photos of the family and also Dan's father who was up from Christchurch for the weekend (and was up during the Earthquake the day before the shoot) so my thoughts are with him and all those from Christchurch during this scary time.

Anyone for a Singapore Sling?

Well ladies and gentlemen. We are safely in the Capital of South Korea, Seoul, at the moment, after a wonderful and successful few days in Singapore. We have been in South Korea for 2 days now and it has been fantastic. We had a sponsors concert with the World Vision Korea Children's Choir this evening, where member of the Samsung top management and CEO's attended. The Korea Children's Choir were seeking sponsorship but it was also a great opportunity for the NZYC to also demonstrate to the select audience what we are about and what we do. Yesterday about a third of the choir headed to the North/South Korea border on a tour I organised to the Demilitarized zone, DMZ. It was a fascinating experience and we even got to very briefly step into North Korea. I will post these photos in the next few days.

Our short visit to Singapore was also a very successful one, whereby we performed to a wonderful crowd of local choral supporters at the National University of Singapore's music conservatory. We performed alongside the Singapore Youth Choir Ensemble Singers and even presented a joint piece half way through. We also visited a Government High School and performed a short concert which was greatly received and we were even greeted by a Whiata and a Haka by the school pupils.

Shortly after we arrived we also visited the Singapore Night Safari. What a wonderful place.

If you are wondering, a Singapore Sling is a fantastic cocktail from none other than Singapore. Its world famous........ apparently. In fact I just had one tonight, here in Seoul. Singapore airlines also has it on their menu, so they make the flights go a bit faster.

Tomorrow we are performing to the staff of the New Zealand Embassy here in Seoul.

So here we are, on the eve of our big trip. The concert last night was packed and very successful. The response from the audience was very lively and the final applause and the standing ovation had to be my proudest concert moment so far.

Just 3 days of rehearsals and a wonderful free farewell concert stand in the way of a fantastic 3 week tour of Asia and Australia for the members and staff of the NZ Youth Choir.

Finally I would like to congratulate the ALL WHITES. They come home unbeaten, after another fantastic display in their draw with Paraguay. It's a pity they couldn't score just one goal to win as they would then have topped their group. But who cares. They went away as complete underdogs, and come back absolute HEROS!! ALL WHITES cha cha cha ALL WHITE cha cha cha. So proud to be a kiwi at times like this, especially when touring overseas wearing black (or white).

Hello again world. Goodness me I am having trouble keeping up with it at the moment. I have a few posts to upload to catch up and this will be happening over the next few weeks before I shoot off to Asia and Australia, singing (and shooting) with the New Zealand Youth Choir.

Last weekend Anika Moa concluded her nation wide LOVE IN MOTION tour promoting her lovely new album with the same name. She performed at Galatos in Auckland and I popped along to be treated by her soulful voice, accompanied by her wonderful band and the lushous vocal cords of fellow NZ stage sensation Anna Coddington.

Anika has such a lovely smile doesn't she.

A View with a Room!!

Ladies and gents. Its been a while since I have posted anything. My apologies.

Now I hear you ask. What are these two photos for? What am I doing? Im just showing that no matter where you are, on holiday, at work, out for coffee with a friend OR AT HOME LAZING ABOUT you can always fit in some time to take a photo of anything that catches your eye.

So what was I taking photos of?

Its that time of the year again here in beautiful Auckland City, The 'CITY OF SAILS'. Louis Vuitton Cup time that is. For the first time they the organisers sailed some of the races right up into the Auckland Harbour.

ALL OF THESE PHOTOS WERE TAKEN FROM MY BEDROOM.

These were in fact taken from my bathroom. Not a bad view huh.

As I write this Emirates Team New Zealand have just won their last Semi-Final race and go head to head with Italian team MASCALZONE AUDI TEAM in about 10mins in their 1st of the Finals races. It is a best of 7 Series so GOOD LUCK TEAM NZ.

Ripping up at Rippon 10

At the weekend just passed I was lucky enough to be involved with the Rippon Festival 2010 in Wanaka at the Rippon Winery. The weather was HOT and the Bands were HOTTER and not to mention BIG. Well at least one was HUGE and that band was Eru Dangerspiel, headed by ex Trinity Roots drummer Riki Gooch. With over 30 people onstage it was a massive sound. I was singing in the backing 'choir' for the 2nd time with this band. It was a fantastic experience and one I would love to repeat again, whether it be as a musician or a photographer. Other bands included Fat Freddies Drop, The Black Seeds, The Mint Chicks and others. Below are some of my photos from the weekend.

The Dawn Princess visited Auckland earlier this month, one of many visits she will make during the busy cruise season.

The cruise ships always berth alongside the Hilton Hotel on the Auckland waterfront. Here are just a few aspects of this interesting piece of architecture. As you may be able to tell it is meant to resemble a cruise ship itself.

On Monday I was lucky enough to be tasked to photograph Prince William's visit to the National War Memorial in Wellington, New Zealand. He was an amazingly nice and kind person to be around and he asked everyone lots of questions and seemed to be genuinely interested in what they had to say. It was an honour to photograph him.

Time is Free-Running Out

Two weekends ago after waking up rather late on a Sunday morning, I looked out my window and saw a bunch of crazy young guys (and on closer inspection, one girl) running around the ferry terminal car park and jumping and diving over the sea wall and onto the sand, doing all sorts of backflips and kung fu style moves in mid-air. They truly were death defying stunts. I suddenly wanted to go out and shoot them............... with my camera, not my secret stash of cold war era weaponry. I however realized I had a coffee date with a friend so had to pass the opportunity by.

I've always told myself to just jump at those chances, as they don't happen often and you can get some great results, so I was extremely stoked when on the following Sunday (I woke up a bit earlier this time) I saw the same group of people doing the same stunts. This time I wasn't letting anything get in my way. I jumped to action and got some gear organized and ran the extremely long 30m out of my house to where they were, not wanting to waste any time.

I politely introduced myself and the rest is history.

I found out what they were doing is called 'Free Running' and they meet up in different places around Auckland City each Sunday weather permitting.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM GAP

Its the one time of the year you're allowed to just eat, eat and eat some more. Its been a fantastic day down in Tauranga with just some of my large extended family, with 22 of us gathering at my cousins place for lunch. I hope you all had a fantastic year and enjoy the break and the New Year and hope you have all set your goals for next year. All photos were shot on my new 50mm f1.8 lens.

I went into Ponsonby last night and checked out the wonderful Telecom Christmas Tree light show. You lie underneath the huge setup on beanbags and just enjoy. You become very transfixed. I would recommend you go see it. There is also one in Wellington at Frank Kitts Park. This was taken on my brand new Sony cellphone C510a. It has a fantastic little 3.2mp Auto Focus camera in it.

There is no such thing as an original idea

There is a saying that floats amongst the world wide photographers community that there is no such thing as an original photo. Up until now I haven't really taken much notice of this. I thought all my great ideas and concepts were my very own, my creation.

However with millions of cameras on this planet there will inevitably be someone, somewhere who has already used your brilliant idea and you have no idea till someone politely congratulates you for replicating with great precision a famous shot of this or that.

I have very recently been in this very situation. Today in fact. And it has occurred within a much closer community than I would have ever imagined.

On my recent trip to the Tongan Island effected by the Tsunami, I captured a really intriguing image of something I found in the wreckage of what was left after the Tsunami had ripped through a village. You may have seen it in my 2nd to last blog. Well here it is again.

Now this afternoon an old colleague of mine emailed me, with an extremely freaky revelation.

He quoted what I said before about 'no such thing as an original photo', and revealed to me that he had in fact seen an image almost completely identical to this one in the past. And he wasn't talking about one he had seen in a book of famous or historical photos, in a newspaper or on the web. It was an image that our very own Ex Boss had taken himself in the 1990's in Kuwait. I myself have absolutely no recollection of ever seeing such an image or hearing any stories about it. On talking with my old boss later on today it was revealed that he had it on the wall in his office while he was working with me but not once did I take any notice of it or recall it in any way in my memory bank while photographing my version of it in Tonga.

It just goes to show that either our photographic 'vision' is very similar or there truely is NO SUCH THING AS AN ORIGINAL IDEA.

True coincidence is my verdict.

A day out + lightroom 2.0 test + fifty mil test = Great fun

I caught up with a friend for coffee and then went shooting today.

I am finally using ADOBE Lightroom 2.0 people. FINALLY. And I am so pleased with the post production results. Just take a look below. However I am still very confused with the layout of the software at this stage. Might take some getting used to.

Plus I am testing out my BRAND NEW Nikon 50mm F1.8 lens. She's a teeny weeny thing and I love it so much already.

.....and the wave that did come. With horrible force

This post is basically to share with you the devastation left by the terrible tsunami on a remote Island in the Tongan Islands group, called Niuatoputapu.

All photos belong to the NZ Defence Force. This is the work I was performing while on the the Navy's Multi Role Vessel when we travelled to Tonga and Samoa just last month. All photos here were taken on a tiny remote island of Tonga called Niuatoputapu, where 9 people lost their lives.

Please take a moment to remember those who were lost in both countries by looking through these images.

The above image appeared in the NZ Herald along with a few others during our trip.

It was an honour to be able to help out these people in a time of such need, and they were very grateful for our presence.

We all have our idols. Someone to learn from, someone we aspire to. For a number of years I have followed a great photographer and creative genius and he goes by the name of Chase Jarvis from the USA. Lately he has been posting heaps of photos taken with his iphone on his blog in order to make a point. The point was, as stated in the title of this post, that "The best camera is the one thats with you". It doesn't matter how many mega pixels it is or what ISO is goes up to, how good its dynamic range is BLAH BLAH BLAHDY BLAH, as long as you have a camera with you all the time. Almost everyone does........ even if its a cellphone its still a camera. The most important thing is that you share your images, your vision with others. There's no point on them staying locked up on your memory card or hard drive.

I don't have an iphone, well not yet anyway, but I have really taken this advice on and plan to do something similar, with whatever camera I have on me at the time, whether it be my 4 year old mobile, or my rather flimsy looking sony touch-screen compact job or my professional gear. The point is I will shoot. Anything, anywhere.

But I don't want to be alone. Maybe you could take some of the inspiration I got from a crazy dude all the way over in Seattle, USA. Join in with me. It'll be fun.

Once in a blue Moon

Well actually this scene replicates itself, in many hundreds of different shades and colours, almost every night and I only have to venture about 20m from my front door to shoot it. Sounds rather lazy doesn't it. Well as the weather seems to be getting a lot nicer I am going to be out an about much more in the coming weeks so keep an eye out.

Devonport beach is possibly Auckland's most popular spots for tourists to come to and get their photo taken. I plan to monopolize on this in the summer by providing my services to take lovely portraits in front of the city, but some other media services seem to be using the beach already.

Sunday saw Auckland shrouded in the first evidence of the on-coming summer sun. From my bedroom window I saw a huge fuss down on the sand. I had to go check it out. A bunch of Chinese and NZers had got together to film a sing-a-long to a chinese song to promote the growing connection between the two regions of the world. It was absolutely hilarious to watch and right at the end a group of young peeps complete with guitar and rugby ball finished off the days filming.

Unitec in Auckland was the venue and both Antiform and Concord Dawn pumped their tunes to a large crowd. Antiform are getting louder and meaner with their wicked live sets and the music they create can only be described as one of NZ's best marriages between Drum'n'Bass/Breaks and a strange sort of Electronic Rock. FANTASTIC.

Hello everyone Its been a very long time since I last plugged into the Matrix. Here I am again, finally.

Last weekend Red Bull ran an amazing event in Downtown Auckland at Britomart. It was called the RED BULL City Scramble and involved a large group of Motor X pros and enthusiasts from all over NZ and the world blasting around a short but extremely tough and demanding track full of rough obstacles. After a series of Heats and Semis only one could be crowned King of the City. It was an awesome spectator show and made for some wicked photos.

The funniest thing was that I did not have a media pass that all the other media did, however I was not stopped once from entering their special exclusive areas for the best angles. Only one girl asked where my pass was and I said i left it at home. She just let me right through.

Ousting Alinghi ..... FINALLY

It has been a fantastic 2 weeks of sailing on the Waitemata Harbour. The series was completed today with Emirates Team New Zealand taking the 1st Louis Vuitton Pacific Series Cup in a best of 5 races against Americas Cup holders Alinghi.

The weather didn't stop a huge crowd from turning up at North Head in Devonport for the final showdown.

Next stop was the Viaduct, where an enthusiastic crowd was waiting for Team New Zealand to arrive back at the Pacific Series Head Quarters. Another shooter friend, Sam, was with me and we were promptly asked if we were looking for the media gate. Next thing we knew we were up the front with a huge rowdy bunch of photographers and journalists.

Martin Tasker, voice of Americas Cup commentary, shows his exhaustion after a huge 2 weeks on the water.

Dean was impressed with my willingness to get a self portrait with him. As were many other photographers.

Sea Legs and other such thrills

Waitangi weekend was always going to be a fantastic occasion this year, but the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series sailing regatta occuring over the last week and all of next week added some extra thrill to the long weekend. It has brought 1000s of spectators out to Northhead and Torpedo Bay whalf. The wind on Waitangi day was perfect for a real spectators race with the course set almost half inside the Auckland Harbour.

The crowd grew throughout the day but some were finding other ways to enjoy the sunny day off work..................

Big Day Out in Sunny Wellington

Yesterday was a huge day for all involved in the marriage of Peter and Mani. My day started at 4:30am so I could fly down from Auckland. Most weddings are big occasions but this was huge. Not only were these two young people's lives being connected forever, so were their cultures. It was important to both families that each culture was able to celebrate the day in their own tradition. Two ceremonies meant a big day of shooting, with a more traditional Kiwi garden ceremony in the morning followed later by a traditional Laos ceremony.

Happy Anniversary Auckland

The weather really turned it on for the long weekend. I spent much of it sorting out parts of my website and blog but I certainly got out in the sun and enjoyed a quiet beer and a swim in the sea.

I used no photoshop except for photo-merge. Its made up of 12 vertical photos. I used a polarizing filter for one of the first times ever and it produced the most amazing results.

Homesick

I was emailed the other day by a homesick ex-pat Kiwi who stumbled upon my site and wanted to feature some of my photos from Shapeshifter's concert in Mt Maunganui on his own blog. He is a Designer working in London and a huge NZ music fan, so it was a really nice feeling getting some wider more global exposure of my work.

I suddenly remembered why I love doing what I do and producing photos which have an emotive quality..............I do it for people like Hamish who are moved by such imagery and become transformed to a different place in their mind.

New Day Come

Welcome to a new dawn. GAP | Grant Armishaw Photography is born into a new world.

And that world is Auckland City, New Zealand. I have just moved up to Auckland and into an amazing flat right on the Devonport waterfront and this is the view from my bedroom balcony. I can already tell that Auckland is going to open a whole new bundle of opportunities and challenges for me. I am really looking forward to the next episode in my work and in my life. Bring it on Auckland, show me what you've got.
